He was the Warden at Rockford Penitentiary in Belfont Pa for many years. Prior to that he was a Yard Master for P&LE railroad in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
One of his sons Hugh R. McFarland was shot down in WW ll and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
