He was brought up at McVeytown, and received a common school education. His first occupation was farming. Afterward he was engaged in mercantile business, at McVeytown, and for several years he was in the lumber business at that place. In 1871 he removed to York, Pennsylvania. where he kept the National Hotel until 1875; in that year he sold his interest, and retired from active business.
On December 15, 1846, the First Regiment was organized in Pittsburgh for service in the Mexican war, under the command of Colonel Wyncoop; some of its companies were from Philadelphia. Mr. Ross was a member of this regiment, which was engaged in the battles of Vera Cruz, Cerre Gordo, Chapultepec, and the city of Mexico; their valor received the commendation of the commanding officer.
In 1867 he was a member of the state legislature from Mifflin county, and he was state senator from York and Adam counties from 1878 to 1882. Mr. Ross was a steward of the Methodist Episcopal church, and an honorary member of its first missionary society.
He married Martha Kime, daughter of George W. and Ellen (Logan) Kime.
