Elizabeth Steuber, daughter of John Simmons and Elizabeth F. (Von Almen) Madden, was born in Claremont township of Richland County, IL on Feb. 19, 1871. She was the eldest of 14 children born to her parents.

She was married to Charles Hill and this union was blessed with the birth of two children. Mr. Hill passed away in June of 1892.

A second marriage was to Andrew G. Steuber in Olney, IL, on Dec. 9, 1897, and this union was blessed with the birth of eight children. Mrs. Steuber had lived all of her lifetime in Claremont township, except about one year, when she lived in Lukin township in Lawrence County, IL. She had resided in the home, in which she passed away for the past 68 years. She and her husband had cleared the land and built the home where she had resided.

She is survived by seven of her children: Mrs. Mabel Foster of Miami, FL, Mrs. Laura Groff of Calhoun, IL, Mrs. Ada Piper of Sumner, IL, Alden Steuber of Claremont, IL, Lowell Steuber, Mrs. Freida Klingler, and Mrs. Dorothy Beck, all of Olney, IL. She has eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Charles Madden of Claremont, IL and nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of good friends and neighbors.

She has been preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Charles and Andrew; a daughter, Mrs. Carrie Nettleton, and an infant son, and an infant daughter. Also preceding her in death were the following brothers and sisters: Harry Madden, Simon Madden, John Madden, William Madden, Logan Madden, Thomas Madden, James Madden, McKinley Madden, Miss Maggie Madden, Mrs. Ada Crites, Mrs. Anna Groff, and Miss Lydia Madden.

Her passing came on the evening of Jan. 15, 1967 at her home, in Claremont township. She had reached the age of 95 years, 10 months, and 26 days.

Funeral services for Mrs. Steuber will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of the Summers-Rainey Funeral home, with Bro. William Read officiating. Interment will be in the Eureka Cemetery south of Claremont, IL.
