Staff Sergeant, 23rd Infantry Battalion, 7th Armored Division, Company C.

John Gerard "Roddy" Carroll was the son of Dennis Carrol and Florence Ronan. His father was an inspector in the City of Yonkers Engineering Bureau. Including John, the Carroll family had four sons who served during the war, Dennis, William and Thomas. He also had five sisters, Florence, Dorothea, Margaret, Mary Alice and Gertrude. The family lived at 19 Amackassin Terrace.
Roddy entered the service in February, 1942, while attending Gorton High School. He received his training at Camp McCain, Mississippi and Fort Jackson, South Carolina where he quickly rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Carroll landed in France in early September, 1944 assigned as squad leader to Company C, 23rd Armored Infantry Battalion, 7th Armored Division. On October 19, 1944, while fighting in the vicinity of canal east of Deune, Holland, Staff Sergeant "Roddy" Carroll was killed in action. He was only 20 years old.
The body of Staff Sergeant Carroll was returned home to Yonkers on 13 November 1947.He was waked at the Ball Funeral Home, at 100 Lake Ave. A mass of requiem was celebrated in the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart with members of the Catholic War Veterans serving as a color guard and honorary pallbearers. Burial was up in St. Joseph's Cemetery and Bugler Thomas Pyne of Post Seven, American Legion, sounded taps and the rifle squad of that post fired a salute over the grave.
