SHELBY -- John C. Lykins, 70, of Second St. Extension, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, in Select Specialty Hospital, Columbus, after a long illness.
Born May 15, 1938, in rural Shiloh to Benjamin and Ina Brown Lykins, he had been a Shelby resident for the majority of his life.
A 1956 graduate of Shelby High School, he was formerly employed with Ohio Seamless Tube, General Industries and ultimately retired from General Motors in 1991. He was a member of the U.A.W. and former member of the V.F.W. post 3494 in Mansfield.
John played guitar and sang along with his wife, Barbara Jean, in his band, John Lykins and the Better Ideas, performing in the area for over 23 years. He loved music and his grandchildren, and enjoyed boating, cars, riding motorcycles and playing cards.
He was an avid reader and a talented carpenter who had built several homes.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Jean Staton Lykins, whom he wed May 29, 1959; three sons, John Lykins Jr., Steven (Kim) Lykins and Jody (Pamela) Lykins, all of Shelby; daughter, Angela Snipes of Shelby; 16 grandchildren, Suzi, John III, Hollie, Paul (Jenny), Sara, David, Ryan, Heather, Haley, Joshua, and Eric Lykins, Amanda (Dennis) Laferty, Andrew, Adam, Aaron (Mary) Snipes, and Autumn Douglas; 13 great-grandchildren, Austin, Caiden, Isaiah, Katlyn, William, Felicia, Grace, Philip, Layla, Tyler, Lauren, Anna Belle and Olivia; his mother, Ina Bisel of Shelby; one brother, Daniel C. (Nancy) Lykins of Mansfield; nieces, nephews and other relatives
He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Lykins; sister, Sara Steward; nephew, Billy Steward; and father and mother-in-law, Ray and Opal Staton.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, from Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. The Reverend Ed Gayheart will officiate with interment to follow in Oakland Cemetery.
