A chapel funeral service for Marshall Charles Wartnik, 76, of Coos Bay, will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Coos Bay Chapel, 685 Anderson Ave., with Rabbi Jacqueline Brodsky of Congregation Mayim Shalom officiating. Interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, 63060 Millington Frontage Road, Coos Bay. A reception will follow at Greenacres Community Church, 93512 Greenacres Lane.

Marshall was born Aug. 10, 1931, in Los Angeles, the son of Harry and Frances (Jays) Wartnik. He died Aug. 2, 2008, in Coos Bay.

Marshall was a U.S. Marine Veteran, serving in Korea and Japan. He married Maria R. Mun-z June 23, 1963, in Winterhaven, Calif. They moved from Los Angeles to Grants Pass in 1968, looking for a better place to raise their family. Marshall sold rural real estate for 20 years and enjoyed managing timberland. He also sold stamps and sports cards on Broadway Avenue in North Bend for nine years, where he especially enjoyed interactions with the many youths who frequented his shop.

Marshall was a very concerned citizen, running for political office on three separate occasions. He attended the 1980 Republican National Convention as an alternate delegate for Ronald Reagan and actively served on the Republican Central Committee.

Marshall enjoyed propagating rhododendrons and was part of the Rhododendron Society and Coos Bay Garden Club. He was a big fan of wrestling, was one of the founders of the Coquille Matt Club and enjoyed taking his sons to meets all around the state, always a family event.

Marshall was a proud longtime member of the Coos Bay Lions Club, serving as president during the 1992-1993 office. He loved the Lord and God's creations. He was a proud member of Congregation Mayhim Shalom, the Bay Area's Jewish community for many years, where he celebrated his Bar Mitzvah. He and Maria later traveled to Israel in 2004.

Marshall was a proud father and grandfather. He loved people and didn't know a stranger. He kept people connected within his family and friends and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, of 45 years, Maria Wartnik of Coos Bay; three sons, Neil Wartnik and wife, Kerri of Florence, Grant Wartnik of Coos Bay and Jayson Wartnik of Coos Bay; brother, Anthony Wartnik and wife, Lynn of Mercer Island, Wash.; step-sister, Barbara Kosberg and husband, Marty of Los Angeles; and three grandchildren, Hannah, Elizabeth and Anne Wartnik of Florence.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Congregation Mayhim Shalom, P.O. Box 307, Coquille, OR 97423; or the Coos Bay Lions Club, P.O. Box 3, Coos Bay, OR 97420.

Arrangements are under the direction of Coos Bay Chapel, 267-3131.
