"In a history of the Mitchell Church done in the late 1890's, Thomas Franklin mentioned an incident concerning John W. Franklin that applies to this cemetery. It seems That John found a very large, unique petrified palm stump in the woods, and he decided it would make a splendid headstone for his grave. He hauled the stump to Mitchell Cemetery and placed it where he planned to be buried. When he later changed his mind about the burial location he desired, he moved the stump to Holly Grove where it currently lies at the foot of Mr. Franklin's grave." Jane McManis 2000
