Nutritionist and Author. Considered to be the Father of Naturopathy, Arnold Ehret was born near the Black Forest of Germany. This pioneer health advocate received his university degree at the age of 21. A man of multiple interests, he studied chemistry and physics, as well as painting. He also mastered several languages aside from his native German, including French, Italian and English. After years of suffering from various forms of ill health, he set out to discover a beneficial and nutritional way of life. Using continuous self experimentation combined with his studies of the diets in Europe and the Middle East, Ehret developed an entire system based on his "musucless diet" and periodic fasting. This system was defined by the Professor as: "Raw fruits and, if desired, raw green-leafy vegetables; these form the ideal food of man." After founding a sanitarium in Switzerland, thousands of patients were successfully taught his methods of regaining their health by this system. Arriving in the United States in 1914, he embarked upon an enormously popular lecture tour. Over the years, he continued his lectures and as well as writing several books, including, "The Mucusless Diet Healing System," "Rational Fasting for Physical, Mental and Spiritual Rejuvenation," and "Physical Fitness Through a Superior Diet." These books are still in print and are the foundation for nutritional guidelines which continue to be recognized as relevant in today's diet. Settling in Los Angeles, he reestablished his sanitarium, successfully cultivated a substantial garden which consisted of all things edible, and continued his sold-out speaking engagements. On a damp, foggy October evening, upon the completion of a lecture, he was walking along Olive Street in Los Angeles with a two companions, when he slipped on a patch of car oil. He fell silently and when one of the friends turned around, Dr. Ehret was found lying prone with his head against the curb. He had suffered a basal fracture of the skull which caused his instantaneous death at the age of 56. His remains were cremated the following day and the ashes now rest within his uniquely designed urn. Universally recognized as one of the world's leading authority on fasting and pure diet, the Arnold Ehret Health Club, along with his published works, are still flourishing today.
