Chisago County Press - 14-Sep-1939

Funeral services for Miss Bertha I. Swenson, whose death occurred Sept 5, were held from the Zion Lutheran Church in Chisago City, last Saturday afternoon with Pastors C. E. Slatt and Constant Johnson in charge. Miss Astrid Palmer sang, “Nearer Still Nearer" and "Abide With Me”, with Mr. Arnold W. Johnson as accompanist. The church was well filled with relatives and friends of the deceased. A large number of floral tributes adorned the front of the church. Interment was made in the West Green Lake Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Mauritz Bergquist, Kenneth Broberg, Ed Melander, W. Stanley Oberg, Martin Peterson, and Arvid Victor.

Miss Swenson was born in the Chisago City community, October 4, 1902. On May 12, 1918, she was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church of which church she has been a member ever since. She attended Chisago City school, graduated from Chi-Hi High School, and later from the State Normal School at St. Cloud. She has also taken considerable work at the University of Minnesota. She has been engaged in the teaching profession for many years, teaching in Chisago City, Monticello, Northfield, Elgin, IL and for the last several years in Racine, WI.

At the close of the last school year, she became ill. No effort was spared in giving her the best of medical and hospital care and for a time it seemed as if she would regain her health, but towards the end of the summer, she gradually became weaker.

Miss Swenson was rated as a very efficient teacher. Her love of and success with little children was proven by the love and respect which the children accorded her. Being of a friendly disposition she won many friends wherever she labored. Sympathizing deeply with friends who were ill, she visited them often ever seeking to bring comfort and cheer. She was greatly devoted to her parents and brothers and sisters.

The following survive to mourn her departure: Parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Swenson; the following brothers and sisters: Mildred, Racine, WI, Gertrude, Mrs. W. Hendenstrom, St. Paul; Henry and Gilbert, Chisago City; Walter, Milwaukee, WI, Myrtle, Mrs. H. W. Reick, Minneapolis, Phillip, Minneapolis, Mr. Leonard Arling, Minneapolis, Ray, Riverside, CA and many other relatives and a large number of friends.
