* Documentation taken from Fold-3 Military Records and a Book confirm the following: John Y. Apling/Appling enlisted in the 8th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry, USA in Lebanon, Missouri at age 27. {1862-27= 1835 per Book; Fold-3 gives Birth as stated above.} Enlisted and Promoted to 2nd Lt. in Co. "H" on August 9, 1862. September 9, 1862 Col. W. F. Geiger, 8th Regiment of 8th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry Headquartered at Springfield Post issued Special Order # 65 Detailing Lt. Jno. G. Appling and -5- men with -4- days rations to search fro escaped prisoner. February 3, 1863 Letter from Assistant Surgeon, F. H. Van Eaton stating Discharge for 2nd Lt. John Y. Apling. This was followed by a Letter on February 16, 1863 issued by command of Maj.-Gen. Curtis, Special Oder # 42 for Discharge for Disability. April 2, 1863 a Letter from Camp on Elk Creek, Missouri from Captain John A. W. Paynter, Commanding Company "A", 6th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry states: John Y. Appling was a Pvt. in Company "A", 6th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry and left on or about 30th June 1862 and that he met Appling at Prairie Grove, Arkansas and Appling advised him of his Commission. I have never been officially informed3of his promotion, his disability, or his discharge and is marked as still on Muster Roll of my Company as of the 31st December, 1862 as promoted to 2nd Lt. Company "H", 8th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry by Commission as of 9th August 1862. In obedience to Col. Wickersham Order of 31th March 1862 respectfully ask that said John Y. Appling be discharged from the service. John Y. Appling is indebted to the U. S. for a McClellan Saddle. John Y. Appling admits to this in a letter in his file {Later.} and promises to pay for the saddle. Mustered Out of Service on July 20, 1865 in Little Rock, Arkansas.
