FRANCIS EARL BENTLEY was the son of ELLA SWARTZ and EDWIN BENTLEY. He married twice and had two known children.

As a young man FRANCIS worked as an engraver, according to the marriage return for his first marriage to ALICE MAY BRAZIER. While single he lived in Vancouver, WA in a hotel or boarding house where young ALICE worked as a housekeeper. This 1904 marriage did not last, although it produced a daughter, THELMA CLAUDIA BENTLEY, who grew up to marry GEORGE ALDEN and have three children of her own.

FRANCIS was also a baseball player in Portland, OR at this time.

He enlisted in the army in Batavia, NY on 15 Aug 1901. Age 19, he was described as blue eyed, with auburn hair and standing 5'6". FRANCIS served in Field Artillery unit 8 and was discharged at Vancouver Barracks in Vancouver, Clark Co, WA on 17 Aug 1904 (having married ALICE BRAZIER in May).

He re-enlisted on 12 Sept 1908 at Columbia Barracks, Ohio. He was listed as a 26 year old engineer enlisting for the second time, Field Artillery unit 8. He was discharged on 18 Sept 1911 at Ft. McDonnell, CA as a master sergeant.

He and ALICE divorced at some point, probably on grounds of abandonment after he absconded in 1904 with money he stole from the Vancouver hotel bar where he worked for ALICE'S brother-in-law. There is no indication at this writing that he ever came west again after his discharge in CA or kept in touch with ALICE or their daughter THELMA.

FRANCIS apparently first fled Vancouver, WA for Pennsylvania. He married a second time to PAULINE J. BENTLEY of PA and they had a son, FRANCIS EARL BENTLEY, who served in WW II. They lived the rest of their lives in Batavia, Genessee Co, NY.

Known children of FRANCIS BENTLEY:

1) Thelma Claudia Bentley (1904-1981).

2) Francis Earl Bentley (1914-2001).

There are three citations for FRANCIS in the newspaper Daily News, published in Batavia, NY. On 16 Sept 1907 he was accused of killing EDWARD T. CONNELL (pg. 1). On page 4 there is a listing of an indictment in the second degree, and on 23 Jan 1908 (pg. 1) he was acquitted.
