Architect. City Planner. He studied art and architecture and Berlin's Technical High School. At the University of Berlin he earned his doctorate in city planning. Gutkind criticized the concentration of populations in the cities In his writings, particularly, Twilight of the Cities (1962) he encouraged the dispersal of industry and housing over a large geographical area.. He succeeded Lewis Mumford as Professor teaching the history of city planning at the University of Pennsylvania. He wrote the eight volume International History of City Development.
