THE ARCADIAN 1970;

The treacherous, rain-swollen depths of Peace River claims the life of a 15-year-old Arcadia boy last week.

Rogers Evans, 15, had been diving into the river and swimming near the boat ramp just West of Arcadia, with three companions, Charles Shields, Rickey Coates, and Darrel Hannah.

Evans failed to surface after a dive and it is theorized he struck a rock under the surface. The accident occurred last Wednesday at dusk. Dr. Elmer Schmierer came to the scene and said Evans died of a fractured neck and drowning.

Deputies G.H. Skinner and Jim Henderson dived for the body and along with Curt Williams who assisted in the diving, found the boy in about 5 feet of water some 15 feet from shore.

Evans lived with his parents at 130 N. Hillsboro.

He was born in Bloomington, Illinois and had lived here in Arcadia the past five years. He was a DHS student and of the Baptist Faith. He is survived by his Father Oswald W. Evans, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; His Mother Mrs. Barbara Jean Harrison, Arcadia; Two brothers Douglas Evans and Craig Evans, both of Arcadia; Two sisters, Miss Tami Evans and Miss Lori Evans, both of Arcadia; His Maternal Grandmother, Mrs. Catherine Hall, Sarasota, and Paternal Grandmother, Mrs Tressie Palmer, Talihina, Oklahoma; and his stepfather, Charles Harrison, Arcadia.

Funeral Services were held April 5, at 1:30 p.m. from Robarts-Grady Funeral Home with Rev. Drennon B. Cottingham officiating.

Burial was in Joshua Creek Cemetery with Robarts-Grady Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
