WOODFORD WILSON--Services for Woodford C. Wilson, 80, of Jerico Springs were at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 12 in the Jerico Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Earl Mann of Independence, Mo. officiating. Burial was in Anna Edna Cemetery with Masonic Rites following graveside services. Music was by the Rev. G. H.Sublett, accompanied by Betty Sewell.

Woodford Cowsert Wilson, eldest child of Lucy Ellen Cowsert and Charles Oda Wilson was born May 27, 1904 in Braymer, Mo. and died about 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 9, 1985 while a patient at Cedar County Memorial Hospital in El Dorado Springs, Mo.

He was united in marriage to Viola Leone Headlee on May 18, 1932. To this union were born two daughters, Ada Carolyn & Viola Kay. After more than 40 years of marriage, Viola died August 2,1972.

On November 2, 1974 he was united in marriage to Darlien Frances Hinrichs. Woody, as he was known to his friends & associates, was converted and united with the Jerico Springs United Methodist Church on April 8, 1968 where he served on the Church board, was lay leader and taught sunday school classes.

After moving to Independence, Mo. in 1974, he joined the Blue Ridge Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Teacher of the Steadfast class and was a member of the historical committee of the Blue River Association.

Woody's vocational endeavor was dedicated to the education of the young people in the state of Missouri. At the age of 17, he taught his first year at Barnes School, having graduated from Fair Play and Bolivar high schools and attended one summer session at Southwest Baptist Junior College.

He continued to teach in Barton and Cedar Counties while he earned his bachelor's degree in education from Southwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1938.

In 1944, he graduated from the University of Missouri with a master's degree in education and earned a Phi Beta Kappa Key.

After serving as superintendent of Billings and Rocky Comfort public schools, he was appointed by Gov. Donnelly to the office of county superintendent of schools of Cedar County. During his tenure in office, he planned and supervised the reorganization of the county schools.

From 1955 to 1962, he served as superintendent of the Preston,Houstonia, and Hale public schools. In 1959, while serving at Houstonia, he earned his specialist certificate in administration from the University of Missouri. All of his college hours--bachelor's through specialist--were earned in summer sessions and at night while he continued to teach during the regular school year.

He later served as elementary principal of Louisburg and Buffalo elementary schools, superintendent of the Collins public schools, and faculty member of the Stockton High School.

He retired in May 1969 after 47 years of service as teacher, athletic coach and administrator.

Woody belonged to numerous charitable, civic, and educational organizations. Among them were: the Jerico Springs Order of Eastern Star, Stockton Masonic Lodge, Boivar York Rite, Abou Ben Adhem Shrine, Stockton and Jerico Springs Lions Clubs, Phil Beta Kappa and Missouri State Teachers Association.

He served as a member of the Southwest Regional Library Board, county chairman of the American Red Cross, and the Cancer Society and mayor of Jerico Springs.

Survivors include his wife, Darlien Wilson; two daughters, Carolyn Overton of Arlington, Va., and Kay Zimmer of El Dorado Springs; four grandchildren, Mary Beall of Fairfax, Va., Lisa Hathaway of New Orleans, La., Kathi Overton of Arlington, Va., and Aron Zimmer of El Dorado Springs; one brother, Marion Wilson of Stockton; five nephews; and six nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Virginia Young, and one brother, Edwin Wilson.
