He was the son of Nicholas J. Clayton and Margaret O'Mahoney Clayton. A High Victorian architect he was responsible for many of the residential, commercial and public buildings in Galveston. His work was so prolific that local historians refer to the Clayton Era. Clayton's major ecclesiastical works in Galveston include St. Patrick's Church, Eaton Memorial Chapel, Grace Episcopal Church, and the dome of the second Sacred Heart Church. He was also the architect of Galveston's St. Mary's Infirmary and the Ursuline Academy.
