Myrtle E. Chalk Barden of Greenbrier, formerly of Higden, went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 14, 2008 at the age of 91 years and 2 months. She was born June 14, 1917 in Higden to the late William Jasper and Cordelia Rollins Chalk.One of seven children, her siblings were: Amos Arley(1904-19810),Zora Jane(1906-1988),James Burt(1909-1928),Ola Mae(1913-1977),Thomas Jeffeson(1919-1979) and Luther(Shorty)Allen(1922-1994) She was the last sibling left in this family.She was the granddaughter of Luther Bonepart Chalk and Sarah Elizabeth McLehaney Chalk.
Myrtle married Chester Markcum(1921-1991) in 1937. They had two sons:Dewey Francis(1938-)and Jasper Curtis"J.C." (1940-1994) They divorced abt 1942 or 43. She married Louis Barden in 1945. They had four sons. Louis Jr.,Larry Daniel, Charles Ray and Darrell Franklin.

She was the oldest member of her church, Higden United Pentecostal Church, where she remained very active until she had to enter the Greenbrier Nursing Home.

Murtle was preceded in death by her parents; siblings; husband Louis Barden; and one son, J. C. Markcum.

Those left to mourn her are sons: Nolen and Della Mae Barden, Dewey and Janice Markcum, Junior and Connie Barden, Chuck and Susan Barden of Higden, Dan and Christien Barden, Darrell and Linda Barden of Greenbrier; a daughter, Ruby Butler of California; 21 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held August 17 at the United Pentecostal Church of Higden with Brother Kenny Long and Brother Melvin Meeks officiating. Burial followed at Higden-McLehaney Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ricky Barden, Dewayne barden, Jason Nott, and Chad Edwards. Honorary pallbearers were Derrick Hipp. Tommy Tackett, and Jerry England.

Funeral arrangements were by Bishop-Griffin Funeral Home of Greenbrier.
