Rites Held for J B Sturdivant
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 6, for Joseph Benjamin Sturdivant from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Reverends George Raborn, Watson and John A. Wade conducting the services. Burial followed in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery with Wise Brothers, of Eupora, in charge of burial arrangements.
The deceased was born in Calhoun County on Oct. 14, 1871 and had lived a long and fruitful life. He was affectionately known as "Uncle Joe" by all who knew him and was loved by both young and old alike. He was blessed with a cheeful disposition and had a cheery word for all with whom he came in contact. His philosophy of life was to always look on the sunny side of life.
Mr. Sturdivant was married on Nov. 23, 1894 to Miss Belle Jennings, who survives his death. Other surviving relatives are two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Baker of Gardendale, AL and Mrs. Maudie Ellison of Woodland, MS; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Dell Rorie of TX; Mrs. Lina Taylor of TX and Mrs. Emma McClusky of Slate Springs, MS; one brother, Monroe Sturdivant of Deleon, TX; a host of nephews and nieces.
Mr. Sturdivant's death at his home at Clarkson was sudden, but it was a consolation to his friends that he did not suffer. He arose early on Monday morning and was beginning to make a fire in the heater when he suffered a heart attack and died five hours later without regaining consciousness.
