CLEVELAND, Va. -- Clara Smith Barton, 84, of the Spring City community, went
home to be with the Lord, Monday, August 4, 2003, in the Russell County Medical
Center.

Born January 16, 1919, in Russell County, a daughter of the late Giles Banner
Smith and Lillie Mae Garrett Smith, she was the wife of the late Paul C. Barton.
She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and was
of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son,
Michael Eugene Barton; a grandson, Paul Brian Keene; four brothers, Dallas
(Bruce) Smith, Jack F. Smith, Paul Banner Smith and an infant brother.

Survivors include three daughters: Paula Harris and husband Manuel J. Harris,
Siler City, N.C.; Joan Carolyn Keene, Spring City; and Patricia Pirolli of the
home; two sons: James Carelston Barton and wife Nancy Barton; and David Jonathan
Barton and wife Sheila Barton, all of Spring City; grandchildren, Steven (Phil)
Keene and Christine Keene, Aaron M. Young, John Ashly Young and Nicole Young,
Clara Ellen Barton, Michael J. Barton and Amanda H. Barton; great-grandchildren,
Austin Young, Jarad Paul Keene, Brianna Young and Cheyanna Keene; three sisters:
Helen Barton, Lebanon; Lucy Barton, Spring City; and Nada Blevins, Lebanon;
three brothers and sisters-in-law: Charlie and Janice Smith, Bristol Tennessee;
Arthur (Buck) and Gaynell Smith, Lebanon; and William (Bill) and Becky Smith,
Johnson City; also several nieces and nephews.

The family extends a thank you to her special nieces and caregivers, Helen
Proffitt and Ola Mae Fields, for the love shown to their aunt Clara during her
illness.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 7, 2003, in the
Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Musick, the Rev. Austin
Fields and the Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Russell
Memorial Cemetery. Serving the family as pallbearers will be: Steven (Phil)
Keene, Aaron M. Young, John Ashly Young, Michael J. Barton, Robert (Bob) Bausell
and Manuel J. Harris. Honorary pallbearers will be: Clara Ellen Barton, Amanda
H. Barton, Harry Fife, Ronnie Proffitt, Daniel Barton, Jimmy Barrett and Quinton
Fields. The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2003,
at the funeral home and at the home of David and Sheila Barton at anytime.
