Bethyne was born December 18, 1916 near Rockham to John and Cora (Clark) Goeken. At the age of 3 Bethyne had cholera for several weeks and was not expected to live. She had to relearn to walk and had several problems due to this illness. She grew up on a farm in Winner, SD. In 1941 she moved to Redfield and worked in the laundry for 8 years and then in a café for three years. Bethyne moved to Yankton and worked as a nurse aide. In 1962 she was admitted to the State Hospital for a short while. She lived in several different locations prior moving into the Sunset Manor in Irene, SD in 1993.
Bethyne loved to spend time outside, playing cards or table games with friends.
She is survived by a nephew W. Gene Benning of Miller, SD and her niece LaVonne Schultz of Nevada.
Bethyne was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Gladys Dubois, Lois Eaton, Winnie Robertson, Ferne Plants and Marie Onwans; and a brother Glenn Goeken.
Bethyne will be cremated and burial services will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery, in Redfield at a later date.
Thelen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
(I am aware that she was born near Rockham. Her father's draft registration says RFD Rockham, Hand County, SD.)
