"Mrs. Harkness is claimed by death - Well-Known and Loved Christian Lady of Biloxi Passes to her Final Reward at Earl Hour Today. Mrs. John R. Harkness, of this city, a devoted wife and mother and known for her Christian qualities, died at her home at 427 Delauney Street this morning at 4:45 o'clock. The passing of Mrs. Harkness has created profound sorrow, as she was loved by all her knew her. Mrs. Harkness was a life long resident of Biloxi, having been born in this city on November 30, 1844, and was, therefore 72 years old. She was a daughter of Rev. William M. Jordan, one of the older residents of Biloxi. Her husband preceded her in death in 1903. Mrs. Irene Jordan Harness is survived by sons and daughters, seventeen, grandchildren, a brother, a number of other relatives. Her brother is Rev. J. L. Jordan, of Biloxi. Her sons were W. T. and John Lewis Harkness, both of Biloxi and her daughters are Misses May and (Stella) Harkness, also of this city, and Mrs. D. E. Morris, of Gulfport. SHe is also survived by a brother, Joe Jordan, residing in Louisiana. Mrs. Harkness was a devout and life-long member of the Methodist Church, South, of Biloxi, and took great interest in church and Christian work even up to the time of her death. Her death came as a result of a number of ailments, from which she had been a patient sufferer for some time. The funeral will be conducted under the auspices of the Methodist Church from the family residence by Rev. H. F. Tolle, the pastor, tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock and interment will be in Biloxi cemetery". (Daily Herald - Biloxi, Mississippi - November 15, 1916 - obit submitted by Carmella Seymour)
