Joseph McArthur, Jr. grew up at 27th and Jefferson Sts. in Philadelphia. He and his brothers Thomas N. and James were close with their father Joseph McArthur, Sr. They operated a wheelwright business, "Joseph P. McArthur & Son."

In the 1880s, the boys went lived with their father at 2450 Columbia Ave. Joseph, Jr. was a clerk in the wheelwright business.

In 1889, sons Thomas and James changed the speciality from wheelwright to "wagon builders." Meanwhile, Joseph P. McArthur, Sr. and Jr. both became contractors with a business "Joseph P. McArthur & Son" on Bailey St. at the corner of Jefferson Ave. with home at 2450 Columbia Ave.

About 1898, Joseph P. McArthur and his son Thomas N. moved to Iona, Franklin Twp., Gloucester Co., NJ where they were farmers. The May 10, 1898 Inquirer listed an ad for a farm hand, 16 years old, to work on a farm in Jersey. Address: 2629 Jefferson St. As early as 1901, this location continued as wagonbuilders under the name "Carter Wagon Co." The wagon business continued, under Joel T. Carter, as late as 1930 with some automobiles being sold from this location in 1917 and 1918.

Joseph P. McArthur, Jr. may have been spending most of his time in New Jersey, too. Starting in April 1898, advertisements appeared in The Inquirer for a partner with money to invest and to manage a "light manufacturing business" at 2450 Columbia Avenue, stating the owner was "otherwise engaged." This was the address of Joseph P. McArthur, Jr.

However, he appears to have returned very shortly afterwards and he was working as a printer and living with his wife Leonora at 1736 Moyamensing St. Ultimately, he and his wife did eventually move to Iona to join his father and brother.

On March 13, 1908, Joseph McArthur and his brother Thomas were charged in an election day scandal of bribing voters with whiskey when Thomas ran for Franklin township, Gloucester county committee. Preston Newcomb, a neighbor, was a co-defendant.

In 1900, Joseph, Jr. and his wife were living with his parents in Iona. He was a retail merchant in a grocery store. Preston Newcomb lived two doors away and his brother Thomas N. (widower, with son Joseph) lived next to him.

Newspaper ads indicate that from 1911 to 1916, he was a real estate agent for farms in the Iona - Vineland area.
