Guy Leslie Hartman MD died at his home in the Foothill area of Salt Lake City on August 20, 2008.

He was born in Big Flats, New York on September 11, 1922 to Fred Charles Hartman and Ruth Agnes Andrews. A man for all seasons, his enthusiasm and passion for many causes endowed him with a life full of varied interests and friends. Learning from his sister how to read before he entered school put him ahead of all his peers and made him the youngest graduate in all of his school classes. He attended Elmira Free Academy and was an honors graduate from Hornell High School. He was a scholarship recipient and graduated from Alfred University. He received his medical degree in the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Buffalo. Following an internship at the Jersey City Medical Center he entered active duty in the army, and was assigned to the US Air Force Medical Corps. He spent three years in the Occupation Forces in Germany as a Commanding Officer of the 85th Air Depot Wing Medical Group and Hospital in Erding, Germany. Returning to civilian life he began a medical partnership in the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in Fontana, California. He served a two-year residency in Pediatrics at Los Angeles Children's Hospital.

Guy was a pioneer in the prevention of child abuse, and voiced these concerns through the American Academy of Pediatrics, San Bernadino County and California State Committees on Child Abuse and Neglect. As a writer and speaker on these issues he was known world-wide. Wherever he lived or worked he found time for music. Music was the breath of his every day life; from playing the glockenspiel in the medical school marching band, to becoming regular organist in the Salt Lake Temple. He sang, studied the flute, and became an eager participant in many Early Music consorts. Before there was furniture to fill the living room, he had to have a piano and would tackle duets with any willing companion. A convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he had many callings including Bishop of the Claremont, California First Ward. His favorite calling was that of Scout Master, and as such, he turned a scout-o-rama project into a far reaching area of pursuit. The creation of a "Sinister Garden" at the clinic where he worked became his effort to teach parents and children about the dangers of many common poisonous plants. Busloads of children were brought to the garden to hear his warnings about castor beans, oleander, and poinsettia, to name a few. He never forgot that he was Social Chairman. Even during his last months in a wheelchair he made attempts to answer the door or invite caregivers to share meals. His sweet smile was remarkable even in his uncharacteristically quiet days at home. Guy was married to Shirley Fenn Baldwin in Albany, New York on December 28, 1943. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in April 1955.

He is survived by his sisters, Ellen Russell (Huntington Beach, CA), and Louise Stayer (Big Flats, NY), his wife, and their five children: Eric Vreeland Hartman (Salem, Ut), Fenn Elizabeth Ketchoyian (Salt Lake City, Ut), Christina Louise Fairweather (Yorktown Heights, NY), Peter Bain Hartman (Park City, Ut), and Juliana Erdody (Altadena, CA.) His posterity includes 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
