MACOMB, IL - Eugene D. Cook, 88, of 100 Timberview Drive, Macomb, Illinois, formerly a long-time resident of Newnan, Georgia, passed away at 11:10 p.m. August 13, 2008 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, Illinois due to a previous stroke and complications of old age.

He was born in Langdale, Alabama on August 3, 1920 and called "Lefty", Gene was the middle son of Frank C. and Jewell Gladys (Gay) Cook, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by older brother, Edgar P. Cook of Florida, who passed away in 1986.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pegy (Judd) Cook, originally of Utah, and their daughter, Mrs. Pamela Spicer, wife of Dr. J. Pat Spicer, all of Macomb, Illinois. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jennifer A. Baird, wife of Zane Baird of Austin, Texas, Brian S. Austin of Creve Coeur, Illinois, Susannah B. Spicer of Macomb, Illinois and grandson-in-law, Adam Spicer of Cantonement, Florida. There are four great-grandchildren, Daniel Baird, Jordan Baird, Madeline Baird, Austin Baird, all of Austin, Texas. His younger brother, Wallace A. Cook lives in Hogansville, Georgia and nephew, Tony Cook is still in Newnan, Georgia.

Gene joined the Army Air Corps in 1941, following the Pearl Harbor attack. His group was sent to the panama Canal Zone to guard that facility. As a sergeant, he worked as an airplane mechanic. After the war, he and his wife settled in Newnan, Georgia where they lived for 49 years. Gene worked mainly as a salesman, retiring with American General Insurance Company in 1985. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served the Church as a branch president, stake high councilman, ward missionary, and temple ordinace worker at the Atlanta, Georgia Temple. Gene was an avid fan of baseball, especially the Atlanta Braves. He loved fishing, a good game of golf with buddies and the occasional vacation road trip.

Funeral services area at the chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on 2000 West Adams Road, Macomb at 10 a.m. Monday, August 18, 2008 with visitation from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Military rites will be conducted at Oakwood Cemetery immediately following the funeral service at the church.

Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb is in charge of arrangements.
