Was a hatmaker in civilian life.

Enlisted in Company B, 11th Regiment New York State Milia to serve for 3 months. Went to Harper's Ferry on 28 May 1862. Was in the Department of the Shenandoah under Sigel's 2nd Brigade. Mustered out on 16 September 1862.

Enlisted in the 7th U. S. Cavalry on 2 November 1872 in New York. At the time of the Battle of the Little Big Horn he was a private in Edward Settle Godfrey's Company K. He was in the fight on what is called Reno Hill.
