US ARMY
WORLD WAR I

Governor of Alaska Territory. He graduated from Juneau High School, was employed at a local mine, and lost the sight in one eye as the result of an accident at work. Hendrickson served in the Army during World War I, and was en route to France when the armistice was signed. After his discharge he worked as a manager at the Juneau city dock, and became active in a laundry, a wholesale grocery business, and other ventures. In 1946 he was elected Mayor and in 1948 he won a seat in the Territory's House of Representatives, serving in both positions until 1953. In 1953 he was appointed Territorial Secretary, a position he held until Alaska attained statehood in 1959. Hendrickson served as acting Governor in 1957 and again from 1958 to 1959. He was the Territory's final Governor, and the first one, territorial or state, to be born in Alaska. After statehood he served on several government commissions until failing eyesight compelled him to withdraw from public life, after which he lived in retirement at his daughter's home in Anchorage.
