Dr. Paul F. Dishner
KINGSPORT -- Paul F. Dishner, M.D., age 78, passed away June 7, 2003, at Asbury
Center at Baysmont, Kingsport, following a protracted illness.

Dr. Dishner was one of two benefactors for whom the medical school at East
Tennessee State University was initially named The Quillen-Dishner College of
Medicine. The naming honored him for generous financial gifts making possible
major campus renovations crucial to provisional accreditation of the medical
school. Upon subsequent renaming of the College of Medicine the State Board of
Regents recognized Dr. Dishner's contributions by establishing the Paul Dishner
Chair of Excellence in Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Dishner also has been honored by the designation of two professional chairs
in his name, jointly with two other honorees, by the University of the West
Indies, where he taught for various periods of time and to which he gave major
financial support.

He was born and raised in Duffield, Scott County, Va., and received his pre-
medical education at the University of Tennessee and at Virginia Polytechnic
Institute. He received the M.D. degree from the University of Tennessee in 1950,
and his post-graduate medical education included appointments at Jackson
Memorial Hospital, Miami, Charity Hospital, New Orleans, Parkland Hospital,
Dallas and University Hospital, Birmingham. Following service in the U.S. Army
Air Force, he practiced briefly in Kingsport before moving to California, where
he maintained an active private practice in Costa Mesa, Calif., and, in
addition, served as clinical professor of medicine at the University of
California School of Medicine in Irvine. He was co-chairman of the Infectious
Disease Department, head of internal medicine, member of the executive committee
and chief of staff of the Orange County Medical Center, Orange County, Calif.

Dr. Dishner maintained a life-long interest in southern Appalachia and had
concerns over the quality of health care and advanced education in the region.
Those concerns led him to make major financial contributions not only to ETSU
but also to other institutions such as the University of Virginia at Wise; and a
desire to foster higher education of under-privileged young people led him to
support, either wholly or in part, advanced education of about 35 students at 10
colleges and universities.

Dr. Dishner was predeceased by his parents, Bradley and Sibyl Miller Dishner,
and a brother, Donald Dishner, all of Duffield.

He is survived by brother, Everette Dishner, Duffield; and four sisters, Ruth
Humphrey of Brunswick, Ohio, Helen Byerley of Kingsport, Anna Gamble and her
husband, Bill Gamble of Kingsport and Lindal Frazier and her husband, Jimmy
Frazier of Blountville. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Ruth Giles
Dishner of Duffield; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be observed Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church.
The funeral service will be held at Three Bells United Methodist Church in
Duffield with Rev. Clarence Dishner at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Dishner
Cemetery, Duffield.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be
made to Three Bells United Methodist Church, Duffield, Va. or the University of
Virginia at Wise.

Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is serving the Dishner family.
