The death of Thomas E Lilly, who passed away on Wednesday at his home on Flat Top, was due to paralysis and not from injuries sustained by being thrown from a horse as first reported.

While returning home and within half a mile of his residence on Monday afternoon, March 23, he suffered a stroke of paralysis while on his horse and fell to the ground, his right foot hanging in the stirrup. In this condition it is thought he remained for probably forty-five minutes until he was discovered by Lowe Phillips, who was passing along the road and who released him from his perilous condition.

He was paralyzed in his right side and being unable to remain on the horse fell. Fortunately the horse did not frighten and remained quiet. When Mr Phillips found Mr Lilly he was partially under the horse, but the horse had scarcely moved from the indications of the surroundings.

He was removed to his home and a physician summoned. Little could be done for him, as he was speechless and only partially conscious.

Mr. Lilly was 80 years of age and a remarkably strong man physically. He served as a petit juror at a recent term of the Raleigh court and was able to do considerable work about his farm. He was a Confederate soldier and well known in the counties of Summers, Mercer and Raleigh.

Mr. Lilly was a son of Lige Lilly, long deceased, and was born and resided all his life at Flat Top. He was an excellent citizen and his sad death comes as a distinct shock to the family and his numerous friends.

He is survived by his wife and four sons as follows: T H and Evert Lilly of Hinton, and Lundy and Bird Lilly of Flat Top. He also leaves four daughters, Mrs Mary McGinnis of Flat Top, Mrs George Sweeney and Mrs T E Moye of Ghent and Miss Isabell of Flat Top.
Of a family of fourteen children all have passed away except two brothers, L H Lilly of Ellison and I R Lilly of Shady Springs.

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev Bryant and the remains buried at the family graveyard on Friday morning at eleven o'clock. The funeral and burial was largely attended.
