After high school, Bernie attended Washington State College for a year. He then traveled to the Yukon Territory, serving as a deckhand on a river paddleboat. After befriending a member of the RCMP he enlisted in the RCMP, serving as a pilot from 1939 to 1944. He later transferred to the U.S. Army Air Force, again, serving as a pilot.
On Feb. 25, 1945, Bernie married Betty Dennis in Niagara Falls.
After World War II ended, Bernie and Betty returned to Whidbey Island. Bernie worked as a civilian firefighter at NAS Whidbey Island, retiring as a captain after more than 23 years of service. He then became a realtor.
Bernie was an active member of the Coupeville Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting and poker.
He was preceded in death by Betty, his son Dennis, his parents, his brothers Kenneth and Bill, and his sister Peggy Cooley.
Funeral services to be held at Burley Funeral Chapel at 11 am Saturday, Aug. 23. Cremation following with family inturnment at Sunnyside Cemetery.A reception for family and friends will follow at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge. Memorials may be made to the Coupeville Lions Club Foundation.
