Obituary - - Mrs. Mary Barrett

Mary Jane Barrett was born in Harrison, Pennsylvania. March 3, 1839, and died in Graettinger, Iowa, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O. D. (Mary E. Phillips) Barrett March 19, 1918, being 79 years, 2 weeks and 2 days of age. She was married to Hiram Barrett in 1856. To this union was born one son, George, who died at the age of nine years. An adopted daughter, Dora died at the age of nineteen years. Mrs. Barrett lived with her husband on a farm near Estherville during the Civil War and together they faced the hardships of our early pioneer days. They moved from Estherville to Round Lake, Minnesota, where they lived for nearly twenty years when they returned to Estherville where she has resided continuously for about twenty-five years. Her husband's death occurred twenty-two years ago.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Phillips of Estherville, and Mrs. Helen Thomas of Spirit Lake, who were with her when she passed away. Many nieces and nephews are left to mourn her loss and by whom the memory of Aunt Jane will always be treasured as her life was a splendid example of consistent Christian living.

Mrs. Barrett was a member of the M. E. church and loyal and devoted ever to her Master's cause. Since she became a cripple through a fall about two years ago, it was a great cross to her that she was unable to be present at the services of the church she loved. Her helplessness was also a great trial to her as she wished to minister and not be ministered to.

She was charter member of the W. R. O.

Mrs. Barrett was taken ill with pneumonia about three months ago, complications set in and with her weakened condition death came as a relief to her suffering.

She will always be remembered by her many acts of kindness and her tender sympathetic nature. She longed to go and eagerly waited the call to come where ‘tis written no burdens allowed to pass through.
