Clarence R. "Jack" Barnes, 82, 4 Stearns Street, Massena, died Saturday, May 24, 1980 at 10:40 p.m. in Massena Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for a day.

He had been a resident of the Highland Nursing Home since March 9, 1978.

Surviving are his wife Beulah; two sons, Robert C., Fort Lauderdale, FL, and John C., Westville, NY; a daughter, Mrs. Harvey (Barbara) Montgomery, 4 Stearns Street, Massena, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. A brother, Hobart died previously.

Jack, as he was so commonly known by his many friends was born September 1, 1897 in Masonville, NY, the son of the late Charles F. and Amy Jones Barnes. He attended Masonville schools.

He was a barber and began his career at the age of 16 and was soon able to pass the exam to become a licensed barber. He first barbered in Masonville and later went to Valleyfield, Quebec, before coming to Massena in early 1925.

He met Beulah M. Lee shortly thereafter and they were married September 19, 1925 in Canada with the late Mr. and Mrs. Mike Walsh as witnesses.

He started barbering in Massena with the late Adolphe Nadeau moving to the old Newberry building later on with the late Ira Francis and Bob LaBaff. Jack later purchased his own shop from the late Frank Blanchette over the then Westcotts Stationery Store and worked there until he semi-retired at age 62. Over the years he worked with such barbers as the late Wendell and Gary Derouchie, Leo Baines, Joe DeRosie and the above mentioned in his more than 50 years as a barber.

He was a member of the Massena Elks Lodge and the New York State Barbers Association, a former member of the Order of the Moose and he attended the Advent Christian Church.
