Family History: Mary never learned to speak English, she still spoke Gaelic. She loved beer and everyday someone had to take a bucket and go to the saloon to get her a bucket of beer. She did not move to Shawnee when her husband did, she remained at the family home in Kansas. Her son Mike lived with her and he ran a store and would go home several times a day to check on her. She apparently helped Mike with the store as long as she could until she had a stroke. She could count silver money, but she would not accept paper money. When anyone visited her, they had to have a cup of tea. "Tay" is what she called it. Even if they were in a hurry, they had to take time for tea. Mary did make a trip to Shawnee before she had a stroke.

Obituary:The Summerfield Sun (Kansas) January 14, 1898: "Mrs Patrick Welsh died at her home in this city Sunday evening at 9 o'clock, in the 65th year of her life. For three years, she has laid or sat in her chair, almost helpless, the result of paralysis of her right side. Three years ago last June, was the last time she was away from the home, and that day she attended services at her church, the Roman Catholic,of which she was a devout member. A native of Ireland, she inherited the good qualities of her race, and brought them with her to the land of her choice. She had been the wife of Patrick Welsh for 44 years and had always been a loving wife and mother. Funeral services were held at the church here, conducted by Rev. Father O'Sullivan, after which the internment was made in the St. Bridget cemetery. A husband and a large family mourns her departure,
