[Note: Son of Jacob C. & Rachael (Adams) Brazeale; married Ruby Farmer; Brazeal on tombstone]

Dismayed at the prospect of weeks and perhaps months of suffering, John Brazeale, 49, prominent farmer and stockman who lived near Selmore, six miles south of Ozark, ended his life at 11 o’clock Monday morning by firing a revolver bullet into his head just above the right temple. A brief note left for his wife said he had recently learned that he was suffering from an internal cancer. His suffering had become so severe, the note related, that he did not feel able to endure it any longer. Lying in a pool of blood, the body was found by Mrs. Brazeale shortly after her return from a brief visit at the home of a neighbor. Her husband had given no indication that he was going to take his own life, she said, although he had been in poor health for several years and for the past few weeks had been on a milk diet. He frequently became despondent over the state of his health, it was said. The position of the body when found indicated that Mr. Brazeale had stood in front of a large mirror and watched his reflection as he held the pistol to his head and pulled the trigger. Coroner Wilburn Maples of Clever viewed the body but decided, after an investigation, that an inquest in the case would not be necessary. Mr. Brazeale had lived all his life in the Christian county community. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Brazeale, who were among the early pioneers of the region. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Brazeale, and two brothers, Sam and Will Brazeale, all of the Selmore vicinity. Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon in the Selmore church, followed by interment in the Selmore cemetery under direction of the Chaffin Undertaking Company of Ozark.

Missouri Death Certificate gives 1880 date of birth; tombstone says 1878; and obituary says 1877.
