Earl Lee Hogan, 87, of Columbus died at 8:25 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2007, at Miller's Merry Manor at Hope.

Mr. Hogan attended Indiana University and the University of Kentucky. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps Nov. 4, 1940, and served five years as a bombardier on B-17s, completing 25 missions over Europe during World War II. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart and the Air Medal with three Oak Clusters.

He was elected sheriff of Bartholomew County and served from 1950 to 1958 before being elected to the 86th U.S. Congress from the Indiana 9th District in November 1958. He was later appointed to the U.S. Department of Agriculture by President John F. Kennedy, serving from 1961 to 1966, and was chief of business and industrial loans and a rural development specialist with Farmers Home Administration from 1968 to 1980, retiring after 26 years of service.

He was a life member of the 388th Bomb Group and a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Indiana Sheriff's Association and National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Calling will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at Norman Funeral Home at Hope. A private graveside service and military rites will be conducted at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Born near Hope March 13, 1920, Mr. Hogan was the son of Nelson and Mamie Lambert Hogan. He married Alma G. Benthal May 19, 1945. She preceded him in death March 24, 2000.

Survivors include children, Richard Hogan of Mount Clemmons, Mich., Roger Hogan of Clarksville, Tenn., Terry Hogan of Columbia, S.C., Patricia Hogan of Geneseo, Ill., Robert Hogan of Fort Myers, Fla., and Nancy Gilbert of Columbus; grandchildren, Justin, Kelly, Conner, Zachery and Katelyn Hogan and Emma Gilmore; a great-grandson, Jaden Hogan; and a sister, Helen Bolander of Hope.
