Baseball Player. He broke into the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox in 1940, primarily as a second baseman, thus becoming Hall of Famer Luke Appling's double-play partner for a time. The right-handed batter led the American League with 40 doubles in 1942, but he missed the 1944 and 1945 seasons because of military service.
