Russell attended the University of Wyoming (UW) where he was a brother of Lambda Tau Delta (LTD) Fraternity. The 1940 UW yearbook lists him as a Junior, but the school's 1941 yearbook did include him.
He was serving as a P-40 (Warhawk) pilot & flight commander during a mission over New Guinea while assigned to the 7th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group when he was shot down.
LTD was organized on the UW campus in 1937, and installed as the Wyoming Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) Fraternity in Spring 1943.
Based on research to-date by the SigEp Patriots Project, Russell is the second of two WY Alpha Patriots to make the ultimate sacrifice during WWII, and the 33rd brother of SigEp KIA during the war.
