Joseph Ferdinand was the son of Maria Anna Heidenfelder and George Alexander Herrmann. Herrmann guard at the Hospital of the Holy Ghost in Wiesenfeld. He may have intended to marry Maria, but supposedly was killed in a logging accident along the Main River in 1866, just before Joseph's birth.

Joseph was brother to Louis (Ludwig) Heidenfelder, and it is possible that Hermann was the father of both Ludwig and Joseph.

Joseph emigrated from Germany in 1887 with his mother Maria and brother Louis (Ludwig).

In 1889, Maria Anna married John Freymeyer (Freymyer) and he was stepfather to Ludwig and Joseph. With Freymyer, she had 3 more children, Joseph and Ludwig's half-siblings; Leo, George and Mary Freymyer.

Joseph married Catherine (Katie) Veronica Kearns on 9/26/1906. They were the parents of Eugene Louis, Lawrence, Charlotte, and Eileen Heidenfelder.

In 1917, Joseph registered for the military, stating that he was a street car repairman for United Railway, was still a citizen of Germany, and lived at 3425 Texas Ave. in St. Louis.

In the 1930s, he lived in St. Louis and worked as a foreman for the streetcar.
