Virgil Nelson Pilkington, 81, a longtime resident of Nauvoo, died Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
He was born on Aug. 29, 1925, in Niota, a son of William Peter and Edith Belle Balmer Pilkington. He married A. Charlotte Lyon on Sept. 30, 1945, at Appanoose Faith Presbyterian Church in Niota. She died April 5, 2003.
He is survived by a loving friend, Lilla Mae Tanner of Nauvoo; two daughters, Carole (George) Salrin of Colusa and Beverly (Thomas) Tanney of Dunlap; one son, Gary (Bonnie) Pilkington of Fort Madison, Iowa; four grandchildren, Steven (Julie) Salrin, Angela (Daniel) Mesecher, Chad Thomas Tanney and Kelly Gayle Tanney; seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Madeline Gerhardt; and two brothers, Eldon and Gail Pilkington.
He graduated with the Nauvoo High School Class of 1944. He was of the Christian faith. He was an excellent farmer, living and farming near Niota. He had served as road commissioner for Appanoose Township and on the Hancock County Board of Supervisors. He enjoyed fishing, raccoon hunting, gardening, and riding his horses, Commanche and Susie Q. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially rummy and pitch. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends.
A private graveside service was held Saturday, April 21, at Nauvoo City Cemetery.
Memorials in his name have been established for Keokuk Area Hospital Respiratory Rehabilitation or Adams County Hospice.
