Another daughter, Ruby Carter of Salt Lake City, arrived over the weekend to assist in caring for her. She had lived alone approximately 49 years since her husband, David Helm, died.
Services Held for Martha Helm, 86 Smoot resident and early settler of Star Valley, died Tuesday, Aug 30, 1971 at the Star Valley LDS Hospital in Afton after being admitted a few days earlier because of an illness.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept 2 at 12 noon in the Smoot Ward Chapel with Counselor Spencer L. Taggart conducting. Burial was in the Smoot Cemetery with Schwab Mortuary in charge.
She was born Dec 29, 1884 in Feudenstalt Wurltenburg, Germany, to Johann Martin and Pauline Wilhelmine Schmid Schwab. the sixth child in a family of seven. Her father was an officer in the German Army, and in 1881 her grandmother joined the Mormon Church at the age of 76, and with her son and two daughters emigrated to America. Martha, her mother and three sisters came to America in 1886, traveled by train to Salt Lake City and then went to Payson, Utah.
Her family needed a home, and hearing that land could be homesteaded in Wyoming, her father and brother Carl came to Star Valley, staked a claim and built a cabin. Carl then returned for the family, and they started for their new home in Wyoming in October, traveling with several other families. The mountain roads were rough, steep and slick with mud, as it had started to storm. There were six inches of snow when they reached their new home in Smoot, or Cottonwood, as it was then known. The home was one large room put together with wooden pegs. It had a dirt floor and a sod roof. Due to moisture on the outside and heat on the inside, they had a green grass celling. Martha and her sister Caroline went to school in a one-room log building, but had little schooling. She joined the LDS Church when she was 16, and was baptized in Cottonwood Creek during a snowstorm. Her girlhood was spent on the family farm where she worked in the fields and helped milk a large herd of cows.
She married David Abraham Helm Jan 11 1909. They lost their first baby girl, Elizabeth Pauline, who died in infancy, but five more children came to bless their home.
Her husband died March 12, 1922, leaving her to raise her family alone. She was later privileged to go to the temple and be sealed to her husband on July 20, 1937. Martha devoted her life to her children, and they were a happy family. She taught them well and loved the simple things and was deeply religious. She spent much time reading and studying the gospel. She was generous and kind, and was a very active woman who did a great deal of walking. She was a good homemaker and cook and loved flowers having a special ability to make things grow.
In her later years, she spent winters with her daughter Ruby in Afton, returning to her home in Smoot in the spring. For the past several years she spent winters with her son Sam and family.
She is survived by two daughters and three sons, Mrs Onos (Mary( Daugherty, Smoot; Mrs Virgil (Ruby) Carter, Murray, Utah; Sam D. William and Ernest all of Smoot; 25 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
