He chose to immigrate to the US, and changed his last name to Hawkinson, as did his brother Nicolai. He settled in Menomonie, and went by the first name of Andrew. He married Eline Hansen Nordby in 1880 in Menomonie, Wisconsin. His family and his brother Nicolai's family grew up together in Menomonie.
He was fatally injured by a falling limb while cutting wood, leaving his wife and ten children.
