William Greenberry Benefield was born in Carroll Co., GA.
The son of Needham Greenberry Benefield and Polly Duncan Benefield, he moved to Phenix City, AL in 1870s (then called Brownsville, AL).
He married Elizabeth Brumbeloe in Randolph Co., AL

He moved with his family to Danville, VA in the 1880s. His mother, Polly Duncan Benefield Copeland and step-father Joseph Copeland moved with them. His daughter Elizabeth "Bessie" died at six months and is buried at Linwood Cemetery in Columbus, GA (across the river from Phenix City, AL).
William Greenberry Benefield is listed in the Danville VA, city directory 1888-1889 as working for Roberts, Robertson & Company.
He later opened his own furnature and stove shop. He had a very nice home on the corner of N. Main and Benefield St. in Danville.
