Obituary: Mrs. Melissa (Beardsley) Branning.
A sad incident transpired at the home of William Beardsley about one mile from this village, on Wednesday, Feb. 15th, Mrs. Melissa L. Branning, wife of A. L. Branning, and only sister of Drs. B. F. and R. E. Beardsley of Hartford, CT, George W. and Wm. Beardsley of Elm Grove, Charles Beardsley of Binghamton, NY, and Dr. J. E. Beardsley of Danbury, Ct., unexpectedly passed away after about forty-eight hours of dangerous illness. The cause of her death was supposed to be rheumatism. -- The age of the deceased was 43 years, 8 months and 20 days. Of the three children born to Mr. and Mrs. Branning, two have preceded the mother to the home beyond, leaving only one daughter, Miss Bessie, a young lady of about fifteen years, to comfort her heart broken father. For sixteen years Mrs. Branning has been almost constantly a sufferer from rheumatism. During the holiday week, feeling somewhat stronger than usual, she started from her home in Bradford, Pa., to visit among her brothers and other friends. She arrived in Butternuts/Morris, the last of her contemplated visits, about two or three weeks ago, in somewhat enfeebled health. This indisposition she, as well as her physician, considered to be but temporary in its character. Death came so suddenly however, that the husband, who was in Buffalo engaged as foreman for a company of builders and contractors, was unable to reach this place before the sad event transpired. The deceased was for many years a resident of Gilbertsville and vicinity. At which place she was married in 1876.--From Gilbertsville the family removed first to Oneonta and thence to Bradford, Pa., where they had resided about two years. At the early age of 14 years Mrs. Branning gave her heart to God on the old Rockdale camp ground, and soon after united with the M. E. Church, of which she continued to be a faithful and consistent member until the time of her death. The funeral was held on Friday at the home of Wm. Beardsley, and her brothers, William, George, James and Charles bore her remains to their last resting place, which is located in the Prentice Burying Ground at Gilbertsville, NY.
