William David Meriwether and his brother-in-law, John Gatewood Ham, joined Capt. R. L. Y. Long's Company of Cavalry  (known as Plillips Legion,  Company D) at Staunton, Virginia, in February 1863 and served under Gen. J. E. B. Stuart until his death and  then under Gen. Wade Hampton until Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox on 9 April 1865.
