J. Elmer Vess Funeral Rites Set
J. Elmer Vess, 61, a retired construction worker, who resided at 3210 N. Fourth Street, died at his home Sunday at the end of an extended illness. Funeral services are scheduled for Daniels Funeral Chapel on Wednesday April 3 at 2 p.m. Bishop Melvin Westenskow will officiate and burial is to be in Island City, Cemetery. Mr. Vess was born at Old Fort, N.C. on Aug 19, 1896. He had been a resident of La Grande for 26 years. He was a member of IOOF Lodge 16. Survivors include the widow Pearl of La Grande, three sons Jay and Calvin, La Grande Robert of Spokane and five daughters Mrs. Jessie Walker, Mrs. Pauline Ziegler, both of La Grande, Mrs. Carrie Morris, and Mrs. Clara Hoak, Portland and Mrs. Evelyn Denning Hermiston. Five brothers also survive they live in North Carolina. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
