In the final months of World War I, a daughter was born to a German immigrant, Herman Gentz, and his wife, Minnie, in Peoria, IL and they named her Minita. The family moved to the Leon area when she was small. After graduating from the 8th grade she had to stay home and help her mother, since her older sisters had jobs.
She met Millard Oppendike and soon after her 19th birthday, they were married on August 26, 1937. On March 8, 1939 their son, Neil, was born. They farmed south of Prophetstown for about 11 years. They also had an implement business in Polo, IL before buying a fishing resort in Pickerel, WI in the mid 1950's. They moved back to Prophetstown in 1957. Minita worked at Morrison Hospital as a nurse's aide. Millard passed away in 1965 and she worked at GE in Morrison until retirement.

She lived in Sterling for several years before moving back to Prophetstown to be nearer to her family. After suffering a stroke, she spent the last few years of her life at Prophets Riverview Center.
