Fred Hoopes Roylance, 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at the Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem, Utah of Causes Incident to Age. He resided at 780 North 1100 East in Provo, Utah at the time of his death.
Fred was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1913 in Springville, Utah, the youngest child of Austin Hoopes and Sarah Maud Carter Roylance. He was raised on the family farm in Springville and graduated from Springville High School in 1932. He attended Brigham Young University for three years before enlisting in the Army. In March 1941, he enlisted in the US Army. He served in the 115th Engineers Division during World War II in the Pacific. He made arrangements to donate his Army uniform, which he proudly wore during World War II, and other memorabilia, to the Fort Douglas Museum in Salt Lake City. On June 22, 1946, he married Beth Reed of Provo. They made their home in Provo throughout their nearly 59 years of marriage. They had one daughter, Kathleen. Beth passed away on April 10, 2005. Since that time Fred has lived at his home on 1100 East until recently when he moved to a retirement center, The Courtyard at Jamestown in Provo. He was employed for 30 years with the Union Pacific Railroad, and was their chief clerk. He retired in 1981. He was an elder in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Fred is survived by his daughter, Kathleen, and many nieces and nephews who loved him very much. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers, Arnold and Hugh, and three sisters, Maud (an infant), LaRita, and Melba.
Graveside Services will be held at noon on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at the Springville Evergreen Cemetery, 500 East 1700 South. A Family viewing will be held at the Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street, Provo from 11-11:40 a.m. prior to the Graveside Service.
