Her Story
Emma Beatrice Davis led a very interesting life, as told by her youngest sister Grace M. Davis Buck (1887-1976), my Great-Grandmother, with whom I lived, from 1969, until her death in 1976.

Emma was really born Nov 29, 1877, in Hubbard, Trumbull, OH (Birth-Rec), to David Jackson Davis, a coal miner from Wales and Catherine Vogel, born in PA (daughter of German parents). Mother Catherine's Step-mother, was Catherine Heinz, 1st cousin of Henry J. Heinz (of Ketchup fame).

She was known for her beauty and athletic talents; married 7 times (with no children) and kept 'shaving' years from her true Birth year after her second marriage in 1903. Her Death Certificate had her Birth year as 1896, which was 3 years after her mother passed away in Indiana!

She first appears in the 1880 Hubbard, OH Census, with sister Abbie 4, Emma 2 & brother Richard 7m. Abbie would pass away in Nov 1880, while sister Lillian (b1882) and brother William "Bill" (b1884) were born before they moved to Nyesville, Parke, IN to join father David's brother John Davis and sister Margaret Davis Bosley.

Sister Flora (b1885), Grace (b1887, trip to FL), and David J. Jr. (b1889), completed the siblings in Nyesville, IN. In 1893, a Typhoid Fever epidemic hit their town, and Mother Catherine died as a nurse helping the victims. Sister Flora died around 1890 and was buried with her mother in Rowe Cemetery, Parke, IN. Father David remarried a Marion Cary and adopted her son Leon.

In 1894, Emma age 17, got permission to marry James E. Godden, Dec 11, 1894, in Parke, IN.
They were divorced before 1900. Emma took back her Davis last name, while James Godden remarried in May 1900, in Parke, IN.

The Davis family moved to Austin, TX, for a few years, before moving to Cincinnati, OH, before 1900. David & Marion had Lillian 18, William 15, Grace 12, David Jr 10 & Leon 11, with them on 14th St. Divorced dau Emma was a Servant 4 blocks away on Elm St.

In 1903, Emma 25, married Charles F. Miller 30, in Cincinnati, on May 23, 1903.
They were divorced before 1910.

Between 1908-12, Emma joined her sister Lillian and brother William in San Francisco.

William married for the first time, a Muzetta Streeter Deardorff, in 1914.

Lillian married for a 2nd time, a William B. Davis (no relation), in 1915, and moved to Covello.
We have a nice picture of Emma, Lillian and Sister-in-Law Muzetta, from around 1914.

Emma (Beatrice) lived on a nearby ranch with 3rd husband William "Billie" ??, from a 1915 SF "Photo" Postcard (as "Bea") to sister Grace back in Queens, NY.

It was during this stretch that Emma won horseback riding contests, shooting contests and was voted "Queen of the Grape Festival" in Petaluma, CA. At one point she 'shot' a burglar climbing in her hotel window, who ran off holding his arm.

It was at this point she started taking years off her age and married 3 more times, before 1940. My G-GM Grace said she married a man from the Danish nobility, and went to Denmark.

When he told Emma she had to live there, she refused, and on the way back, stopped in Paris to pick up some "China" for sister Grace and an expensive Doll & Carriage for Grace's only daughter, named Lillian Beatrice Buck (after her two sisters).

From 1930-40, Brother Bill, was found in Weed, Siskiyou, CA, with a Confectionary Store and was the 'Honorary Mayor' of Weed. He married Henrietta Donaldson, in 1831, and they eventually ended up in Felton, Santa Cruz, CA.
