Freestone County History Book, Vol. I, p. 377-378

George Thomas Gilpin, attended school in Leon County and at Angus, Navarro County. He farmed as a boy, but got a job in a drug store in Corsicana, where he studied to be a doctor. He worked in Corsicana until about 1894, when he secured a job as pharmacist in Grand Saline, continuing his studies to become a doctor. In 1896, his mother became ill and he was forced to give up his hope of becoming a doctor and returned home to Angus to support his mother.
In 1897, he built a saw mill north of Young in Freestone County and operated it for about a year. He married Julia Dunbar in December 1898, and moved to Ward Prairie, or the Yerby Community, where he built a cotton gin. He operated this until about 1903, when he sold the gin and moved to the Turlington Community. He operated a cotton gin at Turlington until 1906, when he was elected commissioner of Precinct 1 and served two terms as commissioner. After that he was engaged in farming and moved to a farm about two miles east of Turlington.
George Thomas Gilpin again entered politics in 1916, when he was elected County Tax Assessor and served two terms. That year he also bought the Turlington Grocery and the J.M. Parker home place. He and his family moved there in January of 1917. Mrs. Julia Gilpin, his wife, was appointed post master at Turlington and served from 1917 until 1936, when the post office was discontinued. George Thomas continued to operate the grocery store from 1917 until the later part of the 1930's, with the exception of about one year in 1919, when W.A. Shockley operated the store.
George Thomas and Julia Gilpin had ten children born to them.
