John Brightenstine was born in Healdsburg, moved to Covelo at about 5 years and to Buck Mountain when he was about 13. He worked as a farm laborer before he Served in World War I in France in the Medical Corps. He came back to Homestead on Buck Mt., married Dora Frances Asbill and lived there farming and ranching until he retired.
After he retired he moved to Covelo and built a house. After his wife died, he remarried and moved to Ukiah where he lived the rest of his life. He was a great gardener raising beautiful vegetable and flower gardens every place he lived.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 at Eversole Mortuary for John E. Brightenstine. Brightenstine died Saturday in a Ukiah hospital at the age of 86.
A native of Healdsburg, he had lived in Mendocino Co. for the past 80 years. The retired Covelo area rancher was a veteran of World War I and a member of Barracks No. 1000, Veterans of World War I.
He is survived by his children Mrs. Nyta Johnson, Charles Azbill and Virginia McCray, all of Ukiah. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Mrs. Daisy Reed and Harvey Brightenstine both of Ukiah, Mrs. Vira Fitzhugh of Covelo, Ivan Brightenstine of Fortuna, Elden Brightenstine of Potter Valley and Frank Brightenstine of Eureka.
The Rev. David Donnell will officiate at services. Members of World War I barracks will act as pallbearers.
Burial will be in Ukiah Veterans Cemetery.
