He was the first person to successfully jump from the basket of a hot air balloon with a parachute.
He studied physics before joining the French Army. He was captured by the British and sent to prison in Hungary where he was held for three years. During this time he worked on perfecting the parachute.
In 1797, after his release, he continued to work on it and finally completed his first parachute. On October 22nd, he made his first parachuting jump from a hot air balloon in Paris, which was successful.
He met his demise while he was working on balloon equipment when a beam fell and hit him in the head.

A contemporary street ballad:

Bold Garnerin went up
Which increased his Repute
And came safe to earth
In his Grand Parachute
