JOSEPH McCREERY Departed this life in the triumph of our faith April 18 1888 Joseph McCreery of Plainfield ILL in the seventy eighth year of his age, Father McCreery was born in Benton. NY. July 1 1810 He was married in Greece Monroe county NY Jan 12 1830 to Abbie A Van Riper d. 1878, Twelve children were the fruit of this union of whom five sons and two daughters survive with several grandchildren among whom are the Professors Bartholy of Chicago The faithful companion the mother of all these children died Jan 30 1878 In October 188O he took as his second wife Mrs Honor Keyes of Channahon, ILL who still remains and whose affectionate faithful and tender care is worthy of all praise Father McCreery moved from Rochester NY to Plainfield in 1845 He has been from this date to the day of his death a citizen of this town known by all as a zealous and faithful Universalist His conversion occurred within bis seventeenth year after hearing the first Universalist discourse to which he ever listened by Rev Hollis Samson, whose remains now repose in the Plain field cemetery Father McCreery was one of the fathers of the Universalist parish in Plainfield His house like those of Fathers Cropsy, Bill Flagg and other devoted men and women whose remains have been borne from the church to the cemetery was a most welcome home for the pioneer heralds of our faith Through all his last long painful sickness the divine goodness and universal redemption were his constant theme He preached his faith to all who came to see him often declaring that Universalist was the only faith that could adequately sustain the soul in its decline from earth He was a paying subscriber for MANFORD'S MAGAZINE from its very beginning to the day of his death and his memory is blessed The funeral was held on Saturday April 21 in the church the pastor conducting the exercises assisted by Rev Mr Bell of the ME church Kev A II Laing of Joliet delivering a most appropriate and profitable discourse.

He married Miss Abigail Ann VAN_RIPER in November, 1830; she was born in New Jersey; they had twelve children, eight living, viz., John, Joseph, Charles, Alfred, Lewis, Mary, Lucy and Isabell. He lived in New York until 1833, when he went to Canada and engaged in the lumber business continuing four years; he then returned to New York and engaged in the lumber business at Rochester, where he remained until 1845; he then came to Will Co., and settled in Plainfield, where he engaged in farming; continued until 1875, when he came to his present place. He is no office-seeker, his only offices being connected with the school and road. He started in very poor circumstances, and now owns 250 acres in this township. He has been connected with the Universalist Church for the past twenty-five years.
